Okami has been critically acclaimed and celebrated since it’s release in 2006. In case you needed any proof of that, it has just been awarded another Guinness World Record for its critical success. During the Capcom panel at New York Comic-Con 2018, it was announced that Okami was recognized by the organization as “the most critically acclaimed game starring an animal character.” Yes, that is an oddly specific achievement, but it’s an achievement nonetheless.
This is actually the second Guinness World Record Okami has received. Its last one was given to it in 2006, when the game was recognized as the “least commercially successful winner of a Game of the Year award.” It was not necessarily the most encouraging record out there, so thankfully this one is much more positive.
Okami originally released for the PlayStation 2, before being brought to the Wii in 2008. It has since been remastered for the PlayStation 3, and subsequently released on the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4. Be sure to read our review for the PS4 version.
While it did get a sequel, Okamiden for the Nintendo DS, fans have been clamoring for an Okami 2 for years. With the increased attention it has gotten via its various ports and remasters, many still hold hope for even more Amaterasu. Even PlatinumGames founder Hideki Kamiyama would like to see an Okami 2.
