Ninja Theory Scholarship Supports Mental Health Training

Ninja Theory’s Wants to Give People a Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Scholarship

Ninja Theory, developers of Hellblade, Senua’s Sacrifice, has announced that it will be funding a scholarship that supports training mental health tutors with the Senua Scholarship. The studio will be collaborating with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust’s Recovery College East. This announcement comes in recognition of World Mental Health Day 2018, providing students with opportunities to explore careers involving mental health.

The scholarship will be funded in partnership with the Head to Toe charity. Students that meet the requirements for the scholarship will get a chance to work with this organization for a year to become a mental health tutor, which will see them assisting those already diagnosed with mental illnesses, as well as helping patients adapt to their diagnosis within their daily routines.

Here’s a trailer that explains a little more about Senua’s Scholarship.

It’s not surprising that Ninja Theory has established this scholarship in light of how well-received Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was. (It did get five BAFTA Awards!)

In it, you play a schizophrenic warrior traversing the realms of Norse mythology. Ninja Theory’s implementation of sound design to help player’s understand the voices inside Senua’s head was a groundbreaking look at what it means to be diagnosed with such a serious mental illness. Recovery College East was also a key contributor to the studio’s depiction of psychosis, helping to shape an understanding that most able-minded individuals go without. Our Michael Briers even went over how the game handled mental illness.

How did Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice make you feel regarding mental health when it first came out? Let us know in the comments.
