diablo 3 cross-play

Blizzard Is Working on Cross-Play for Diablo III (Update: Blizzard Says There Are No Plans to Implement it at This Time)

Update: Blizzard reached out to us with a statement regarding cross-play. “While we love the idea of bringing our players together across platforms, we do not have any plans to implement cross-platform gameplay for Diablo at this time.”

Original: It may not seem like it, but Diablo III is just over six years old. The dungeon crawler remains a hot topic, as Blizzard Entertainment consistently updates the title and releases new editions. While Blizzard prepares Diablo III’s release on Nintendo Switch, with Diablo III: Eternal Collection, there’s an even more ambitious project in the works. Cross-play between PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One may be in the cards.

During an interview with Business Insider, a Blizzard representative said that cross-platform support is “a question of when, not if.” Presently, the publisher can’t disclose specifics. However, the representative did say Blizzard has been in contact with both Sony and Microsoft to get Diablo III players from their consoles playing with gamers on Switch.

Given Sony’s refusal to alter its stance on cross-play, such news would’ve seemed unrealistic a few weeks ago. Yet, now that cross-play is allowed on PlayStation 4 in Fortnite, the possibilities are beyond wishful thinking. Who knows? Maybe cross-play across the three consoles with Diablo III will happen sooner rather than later.

While the wait for an official announcement begins on that front, something else in the world of Diablo stirs. Apparently, Blizzard has Diablo Reign of Terror up its sleeve, a title that’s leaked via merchandise for the forthcoming BlizzCon 2018 event. Is this an entirely new entry in the series, another expansion for Diablo III, or might this be related to the reported Netflix series? We’ll know for sure soon enough.

The BlizzCon celebration kicks off on Friday, November 2, 2018.
