Red Dead Redemption 2 is poised to become one of 2018’s most successful entertainment releases. An eight-year wait for a sequel to a highly acclaimed release will do that. However, publisher Take-Two Interactive has been steadfast in its position to avoid setting expectations too high. Apparently, this train of thought is shared with Red Dead 2’s development team at Rockstar Games. According to studio Co-founder Dan Houser, a third entry from Rockstar will only happen if this release performs “well enough.”
During an interview with Vulture about Red Dead Redemption 2’s development, Houser said the team may have another Red Dead in them “if this one does well enough and we think we have other interesting things to say.” Naturally, this seems the standard answer for nearly every developer.
Yet, it’s easy to discern that RDR2’s earnings won’t be the deciding factor with regard to its receiving a follow-up. Again, no one doubts the forthcoming Western’s ability to perform incredibly well. Rockstar’s not having another story to tell will likely keep a potential Red Dead Redemption 3 off of store shelves. Possibly, a similar notion explains why Bully’s been on ice for two console generations; though, Bully 2 may be next on the studio’s list.
Regardless of whether Rockstar Games ever develops a Red Dead Redemption 3, the studio’s focus beyond RDR2 is squared on Red Dead Online. The online suite’s beta goes live in November 2018, shortly after the base game’s October 26th launch date on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
