Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Cross-Play Matchmaking Will Be Based on Players’ Peripherals

Infinity Ward has confirmed to DualShockers that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s cross-play matchmaking system will segregate players according to their choice of peripheral. Once players select a peripheral, they won’t be able to switch, preventing cheaters from gaining an unfair advantage.

Assuaging fans’ concerns about the implications of cross-play, Design Director Joe Cecot said:

We’re going to be matchmaking by peripheral, so if you’re a keyboard player you’re going to play with other keyboard players. But, if you’re a console player and you’re playing on a gamepad you can actually opt in. We also don’t let you change your controller or peripheral mid match, so once you’ve chosen it, it’s locked in.

Infinity Ward has also confirmed that Modern Warfare will allow console players who want to use a keyboard and mouse to plug the devices into their PlayStation 4.

As previously reported, Modern Warfare‘s multiplayer will support various play styles including run-and-gun, sniping, and camping. The mode will offer three map sizes:

  • Flash Maps – 2v2 close-quarters gun fight matches
  • Tactical Maps – traditional 6v6 and 10v10
  • Battle Maps – 20v20 and up to 100 players

The game will be undergoing a beta this September, part of which will test the cross-play feature. Dates are as follows:

  • PlayStation 4 Exclusive Beta
    • September 12 – 13 (Early Access, PlayStation 4)
    • September 14 – 16 (Open Beta, PlayStation 4)
  • Beta featuring crossplay testing
    • September 19 – 20 (Early Access, PC and Xbox One; Open Beta, PlayStation 4)
    • September 21 – 23 (Open Beta, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on October 25, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
