Following the console release of Deltarune Chapter 1 earlier this year, Undertale creator Toby Fox has announced that Chapter 2 is now available for free on the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The second chapter is currently available as a free update to those who already downloaded the first chapter, and the game is now titled Deltarune Chapter 1&2 for those who have not yet played it at all.

The news came as a surprise, particularly due to the fact that the console release of Chapter 2 was only announced for the Nintendo Switch during the Nintendo Direct held on September 23, 2021. An hour after the announcement, the official Undertale/Deltarune Twitter account revealed that the Chapter 2 update would also release free for the PS4.
The first chapter of Deltarune originally released for PC via Steam back in 2018. Initially, Fox was skeptical about porting the game to consoles, stating that he “[didn’t] know anything about consoles” and that his priority was finishing the game’s story. Fortunately, he later announced the development of a PS4 and Nintendo Switch port of the first chapter. Similar to Fox’s previous indie mega-hit Undertale, the game took over two years to make it to consoles.
While not a direct continuation of Undertale, Deltarune does make various references and callbacks to the previous game—the title itself being an anagram of Undertale. The second chapter, in particular, is a long-awaited addition that is almost two years in the making, even for those playing on PC;So much so that the influx of downloads from its release last week temporarily took down popular indie-game hosting site ichi.io.

Both Undertale and Deltarune Chapter 1&2 are immediately available on the PS4 via the PlayStation Store. Deltarune Chapter 1&2 is free, while Undertale is on a 20% discount for PS Plus members, currently $8.99 ($14.99 normally). Future chapters for Deltarune will release at a later unannounced date and will be paid additions going forward.
