Stuck in production hell for over a decade, and after numerous production stills and teases, the much anticipated Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg finally has its first official world premiere trailer, giving us a look at how they are bringing the beloved Nathan Drake, Victor “Sully” Sullivan, and epic stories of treasure hunting to the big screen.
While Holland and Wahlberg’s takes on the characters of Nate and Sully respectively deviate somewhat from the games, the Uncharted movie trailer is filled with scenes and references that fans of the games will love, seeming to take inspiration from every title. In one scene, Nate and Sully talk about Nate’s brother, Sam, who wasn’t mentioned or seen until Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Sam seems to play somewhat of a larger role in this early Nathan Drake story, with the treasure hunt apparently tied to finding him, which does indicate that the Uncharted game canon and Uncharted movie canon are distinctly separate from one another.
There are plenty of other scenes the crib directly from big moments and favorite set pieces from across the series. Wrecked ships in caves, big chases through cities, and the big “falling out of the back of a plane with netted crates” scene that’s basically straight out of Uncharted 3. Holland even utters Nate’s famed “Aw, crap!” line at one point. Sully never sports his signature mustache, even though we’ve previously seen Wahlberg with the lip warmer. Which is fine, maybe younger Sully just wasn’t into the facial hair yet.
Notably, unlike the the trigger-happy gun-toting Nathan Drake from the game series, Holland’s character is only seen throwing on his signature gun-holster shoulder straps and firing a pistol once in the trailer, very briefly at about the 1:26 mark. Otherwise, Holland is never seen with a weapon in the rest of the preview. While the games need gunplay and an endless supply of disposable baddies for the sake of “gameplay,” the Uncharted movie looks like it may be pulling back from Nathan Drake being an unabashed killer.
Naughty Dog says they hope that the film will both appeal to brand new audiences, as well as delighting fans of the franchise. Director Ruben Fleischer says he believes “that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film.”
The Uncharted movie releases only in theaters on February 18th, 2022. What do you think now that the trailer is out?
