Square Enix reportedly delayed the announcement of its next PlayStation console exclusive title in order to wait for the release of Final Fantasy 16. The rumor is in line with recent statements from the Japanese developer, which has expressed interest in developing more titles exclusive to PlayStation consoles. Notably, the upcoming PlayStation exclusive will not be a new Kingdom Hearts, nor a new Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.
Final Fantasy 16 Needs a Little More Time in the Oven
According to VGC journalist Jordan Middler, Square Enix initially planned to announce the new PlayStation exclusive around this time. However, Square Enix had to push the next big Final Fantasy 16 reveal to Spring 2022. The delay was mostly due to production issues related to the ongoing pandemic, in which the development team had to “decentralize” its production process.
Unfortunately, this also meant that Square Enix would also postpone the new game announcement so that it wouldn’t divert attention from FF16. Middler notes that Final Fantasy 16 is currently Square Enix’s main focus and that the unannounced PS5 title would potentially “divert focus” from the upcoming game. However, Middler also clarifies that the unannounced title is not another Final Fantasy game, nor a new title in the Kingdom Hearts or Dragon Quest franchises. This removes any possibility of it being Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 or the recently announced Dragon Quest XII.
In other news, fans of Red Dead Online recently took to Twitter to voice their frustrations over the game’s lack of new content. Insomniac has hired Brittney Morris, the author of the popular Spider-Man: Miles Morales novel Wings of Fury, to work on the next Spider-Man video game.
