Sega’s Sonic Team has said that it will bring Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to “the next level” with the upcoming Sonic Frontiers. Speaking to GamesRadar, Sonic Team expressed its excitement over working on next-gen hardware, promising to release a game that’s “high fidelity, high speed, and high energy.”
Sonic Frontiers PS5 will take full advantage of new hardware
“We’re excited to bring the game onto next-gen consoles, as both the visual and technical gameplay elements will be elevated on the newest platforms,” said Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka. “As games are beginning to be released natively onto next-gen, it’s exciting to be a part of the wave that will really deliver on the full potential of these consoles.”
Sega has yet to reveal what Sonic Frontier‘s next-gen versions will entail, but has said that the team has created new environments, new features, and a “totally new type of open-zone experience.”
What Sonic Frontiers’ open-zone means
As GamesRadar points out, Sonic Team has been very careful with its language when it comes to Sonic Frontiers. The game is described as an open-zone experience but the developer has yet to explain what exactly that entails.
“We don’t have too much more to share regarding the environment just yet, but stay tuned for more details this year,” Iizuka said when GamesRadar quizzed him about the open-zone aspect. “We focused on bringing Sonic to the next level and ensuring that he’s fully represented as the character that fans know and love while still making his new form exciting,” he teased.
Sonic Frontiers will release sometime in Q4 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PC.
In other news, a European retailer is allegedly warning customers against buying PS5s due to the Xbox Activision deal, and Cyberpunk 2077‘s PS5 version has appeared on PSN servers.
