In a recent interview, the CEO of PlatinumGames has expressed interest in games that “can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.” This, and other comments seem to point toward the studio shifting focus to more live service titles. This may include Project GG, which has been described as the conclusion to Hideki Kamiya’s superhero series.
Will PlatinumGames only make Games as a Service titles?
Atushi Inaba, who recently rose to president and CEO of PlatinumGames in January, spoke with Famitsu about the future of the company. While he didn’t explicitly state that the studio would be working exclusively on Games as a Service titles, he strongly hinted that would be the case. He stated that he would like PlatinumGames to concentrate on games that aren’t “one-off” content like Bayonetta, and projects that are “different in terms of their structure.”
He also stated this about Project GG:
Project G.G. is still in the stage of testing various things, so I can’t tell you much about it, but when it comes to future game production, we want to focus on creating games that are different from the past. I would like to focus on creating games that can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.
Of course, we would like to cherish and create small but brilliantly conceived games such as Sol Cresta, and games in which you can enjoy the process of clearing the game by going through one-off, well-designed stages, such as Bayonetta.
However, the projects that we are trying to create for the future will be different in terms of their structure. Considering the changes in the market over the next five years or so, I think it is absolutely necessary for us to do this. I’m sorry for being so vague, but I think that’s all I can tell you right now.
These comments come as PlatinumGames is preparing to launch its first live service game, Babylon’s Fall, with Square Enix as publisher. We’ll get to see how Inaba’s aspirations play out when it launches on March 3.
In other news, Tom Holland wants to make a Jak and Daxter movie, and Bully 2 might still be in development.
