If a leaked Sony memo wasn’t enough to confirm plans for an Uncharted movie sequel, its box office performance sure is. The Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg starrer has smashed expectations by generating revenue well above its reported $120 million budget. According to Deadline, Uncharted has raked in an impressive $226.4 million already and it has yet to release in China – the biggest international market. In its second week of release, Uncharted earned another $23.2 million in the United States, bringing the domestic total to $83.3 million. Internationally, it earned another $35 million, bringing the total from 64 territories to $143 million. Suffice to say, Uncharted is already a massive success for Sony Pictures and is officially one of the best-performing video game-based movies.
Uncharted movie box office success defies expectations
Uncharted didn’t exactly receive stellar critic reviews, which makes its box office success all the more impressive. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a critic score of 40 percent based on 210 reviews, but it’s the audience score that better explains the figure of $226.4 million. Based on 2500+ verified ratings, Uncharted holds a 90 percent audience approval rating.
“The film was our first major production entirely shut down by the advent of Covid, yet we persevered to complete a picture the audience loves and marketed and distributed it with strategic verve worldwide, despite the pandemic,” Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman wrote in an internal memo last week. “The ensuing impact is proof once again of the unmatched cultural power of real movies. On the heels of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted is yet another blow to the theatrical naysayers and further proof of the efficacy of our model.”
Opinion: I enjoyed Uncharted and I usually hate game-based movies
Zarmena writes… Look, Tom Holland is cool and all but I gave Uncharted a shot purely out of curiosity, and I surprisingly liked it. For someone who’s never really liked a video game-based movie before, I was kind of taken aback by how much I enjoyed whatever the hell was happening on screen regardless of how goofy it looked. Maybe this is the kind of movie people needed as we try to leave the Covid-infested years behind. I’m glad PlayStation Studios’ foray into movies is off to a good start and I look forward to seeing more.
