The new PS5 system update has been released, but it has been launched alongside a fatal error — the console’s PlayStation Network online multiplayer component is now no longer working, with PSN offline for both PS5 and PS4 owners.
The update was pushed live by Sony in the early hours of this morning, though players were quick to discover that PSN is no longer working. This means that multiplayer games have been rendered unplayable in the meantime, with many displaying the error message: “Connection to PlayStation Network failed.”
Why is PSN offline after the PS5 system update?
The PS5 system update made several changes to the console’s online functionality, including its party chat system. However, it is unclear why it being rolled out has affected PSN and forced the PlayStation Network offline.
For the time being, players are stuck with messages in online games informing them that they “can’t connect to PlayStation Network” or that “connection to PlayStation Network has failed.” Similarly, always-online games such as Gran Turismo 7 have been forced offline, too, with players not being able to jump in while PSN continues to have issues.
In Elden Ring, players have reported that the FromSoftware game displays an error message saying that the PS Plus subscription cannot be verified. In multiplayer-focused games like Destiny 2, players are being told that their attempted connection to PSN has failed.
Sony has yet to respond to these issues regarding the new PS5 system update, though hopefully the error will be rectified sooner rather than later. With many games now completely unplayable on the console, this is annoying news for those who have downloaded the new update in the hopes of playing some PS5 games with the system’s updated features.
