Readers’ Opinion: Which Video Game Villain Deserves a Will Smith Slap?

Readers’ Opinion is a place to share your thoughts in the comments section below. We’ll feature our favorite replies in the next installment.

Will Smith “smacked the s***” out of Chris Rock at last night’s Oscars 2022 ceremony, with the comedian receiving a sizeable smack on his cheek for daring to joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Now we’re not much for celebrity news here at PlayStation LifeStyle, but even we must admit — that there was some juicy gossip. Watching the star of many of the ’90s best movies (and Wild Wild West), the Fresh Prince himself, dealing out a perfectly placed open-palm slap to the zebra from Madagascar had us talking. It makes us wonder what Geoff Keighley has planned to top it at this year’s Game Awards — is Gabe Newell going to run on stage and dropkick Kojima?

So in today’s Readers’ Opinion, we want to know: which video game baddie deserves a Will Smith slap, now we know of his short fuse and propensity for violence?

Our opinion

Paul writes… There might be some recency bias here, but I feel that Elden Ring’s first boss Margit, the Fell Omen should be high on the list of slaps. Considering that I’ve only recently started getting through Elden Ring, the other baddies I can think of have each been dealt many a slap over the years, whereas Margit is still fresh in the memory and high on the list of things in the world that I absolutely hate.

Look, I like Elden Ring as much as the next masochist, but its boss fights readily dive into bullshit more often than not. Why does Margit always hold up his weapon about three seconds longer than you expect? Why is he the size of a small house yet can move at a speed faster than my dodges? Why, when I beat him with a summoned jellyfish, am I told that’s not good enough as it’s not the “proper” way to win? Margit deserves a slap and he didn’t even say anything about Jada’s hair. Go get him, Big Willie.

In the last Readers’ Opinion, we asked if microtransactions should ever be in full-priced retail releases.

Timewarp replied:

No. They can stop with that “development costs are rising” nonsense, in the UK we’re already paying £70 for next-gen games with PS4/X1 games at £60, I’m not paying that much for a game and then going into a MTX environment.

By their very nature MTX have to ruin a game because they only work by making sure the only way to enjoy yourself is to pay for the MTX. Take Assassin’s Creed Valhalla where you CAN spend hours collecting resources to upgrade your armour and weapons or you can pay Ubisoft to just hand you leather and iron ore.

and that’s w/o going into the £30 season pass most of these games have. I already paid for your game, I shouldn’t have to pay for it again.

I can’t remember the last game that I played that had MTs… perhaps Devil May Cry 5, although they were completely useless. You were paying to skip the game that you just bought, if you bought those MTs. In that case, it didn’t bother me in the slightest. But I guess I’m lucky, because most of the games that I play don’t have them. And if they do, they’re useless.

The thing that bothers me about MTs is more the greed mindset. I’ve seen plenty of examples of corporations putting money over human life, and when they put MTs over the player’s experience, I think that these are different degrees of the same thing. So, what does this say about society? It shines a light on what humanity needs to address. From that perspective, it does nag at me a little bit.
