Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition was only released on PS4 today, but that hasn’t stopped fans from asking about a sequel, or even a brand new game in the franchise. Unfortunately, Square Enix has bad news for those fans. A new game in the Chrono Cross franchise is not planned at the moment, although that doesn’t mean there won’t be in the future.
What does the future hold for Chrono Cross?
Chrono Cross Director Masato Kato, composer Yasunori Mitsuda, and Character Designer Nobuteru Yuki told Famitsu (as translated by Siliconera) that there are currently no plans for a sequel or a new game of any type. However, they also said “no one knows what the future holds,” which leaves the door open for a new game in the future if Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition does well.
You can’t really blame the development team for wanting to take a break after finally getting Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition out of the door today. The game was originally due to be finished for the franchise’s 20th anniversary in 2019, but “all kinds of issues” delayed the game for a further three years. For example, not all of the game program and graphical data had been preserved over the years, leaving the team having to play the game for themselves to work out exactly what was missing.
As well as the original game, The Radical Dreamers Edition includes new content such as Radical Dreamers – Le Trésor Interdit. There are plenty of battle enhancements, such as auto-battle, changes to game speed, and even the option to turn off encounters completely. Of course, there are upgraded graphics too, and a remastered soundtrack that includes a brand new track.
In other news, Gran Turismo 7 couldn’t climb to the top of the PlayStation Store downloads chart for March 2022. It was beaten by Elden Ring, WWE 2K22, and even FIFA 22 on PS4 in Europe. Elsewhere, Square Enix has trademarked Tactics Ogre: Reborn in Japan, sparking rumors of a remaster or remake.
