The PS5 is a powerful bit of a kit, combining an impressive CPU and GPU to output some of the best performance in gaming. Not only that, but it does it in a relatively small case with limited ventilation and fans. Powerful components must be kept cool in order to optimize their performance. Any build-up of heat must be dealt with as a priority, which can often mean kicking the fans up to an irritatingly high level. Thankfully, there are some ways to keep the PS5 fan quiet.
How to make the PS5 fan quieter and keep it clean
To make the PS5 fan quieter, users can:
- Set the PS5 up in an open space with plenty of access to cool air.
- Though it might be tempting to put the PS5 in a TV cabinet, this can severely hinder airflow.
- Hardware like the PS5 needs to “breathe,” which involves bringing in cooler air while outputting hot air.
- Covering one or both of the intake or exhaust can result in higher temperatures and lead to the fan noise ramping up.
- Keep the PS5 clean.
- Sony has made it easier for users to keep their systems clean. There are two vacuum holes that can be found by popping off the shell. Head to 2 minutes 30 seconds on this video to see which holes you need to aim for.
- Compressed air can also be useful for blowing out any dust.
- Eject any discs.
- As weird as it might sound, I’ve experienced less frequent noises from my PS5 when it has no disc in the disc tray.
As your PS5 gets older, it becomes more likely that you’ll hear the fan whirring. Repeat the above steps to keep it clean and quiet.
