The Stray release date has been revealed to be July 19, as shown in the latest PlayStation State of Play presentation. Developed by BlueTwelve Studio and Annapurna Interactive, this third-person adventure game will arrive for both PS4 and PS5, and better yet, it will be included in both the PS Plus Extra and Premium subscription tiers at launch.
What was shown in the Stray State of Play footage
In the minute-and-a-half trailer during the presentation, we see the cat having to navigate narrow alleyways, open market stalls, and underground subways in a city of humanoid robots in order to return to its family. Near the 0:28 mark, the cat has to walk through a somewhat flooded tunnel with strange spores glowing along the side of the walls like some sort of infection, possibly alluding to what may have happened to all the humans. As the feline climbs up the precarious urban parts of the city, like balancing on a long metal beam in darkly lit construction site, the cat can collect badges hidden about the world.
Aided by a flying drone named B12, the cat can communicate with the humanoid robots, particularly one named the Guardian, who sees that the animal is lost and may need help. A robot that looks to be the Guardian again with his signature conical hat is seen rowing a boat so that the cat can get through a flooded section without getting wet. As noted on the official PlayStation blog post on Stray, the developer’s decision to add the backpack and B-12 “opened up a new layer of ways to interact and learn about the environment.”
Stray won’t be just a platforming adventure game either, as the trailer shows one stealth section where the cat has to hide in a box to evade drones on patrol and frantically run away from other drones trying to snipe at it. Near the end of the trailer, the feline also needs to escape from a horde of bloated rats in the sewers, but luckily at some point the cat will find a huge tree that looks like an amazing cat tower.
This announcement confirms the initial leak of Stray’s release date on the PlayStation Database as found by PlayStation Game Size. The July 19 date was tentatively marked as a placeholder, but it’s indeed the actual date. Purrfect.
In other news, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is the official name of the next Dragon Age game, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is getting weapons ahead of a reveal next week.
