Supermassive Games Fully Acquired by Nordisk

Until Dawn, The Quarry studio Supermassive Games has been fully acquired by Nordisk Games, which is owned by entertainment company Nordisk Film. Nordisk also owns Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios Group and Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam among other studios. The company previously acquired a 30.7 percent stake in Supermassive.

Supermassive is currently working on The Dark Pictures Anthology

Having released The Quarry, Supermassive is continuing work on The Dark Pictures Anthology. The next installment, The Devil in Me, will release this fall across all platforms except the Switch. In a press release, Supermassive’s CEO Pete Samuels said that the acquisition offers financial security and development resources. His statement reads:

It’s been a little over a year since Nordisk Games made an initial investment in Supermassive Games and our vision for the future. During that time, we have found that we share a lot of important values with Mikkel and his team, and we believe these values to be equally important to our existing commercial partners who we will continue to support. Having had such a positive experience over the past year it wasn’t a difficult decision when Nordisk Games wanted to explore increasing their investment. We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games and Nordisk Games ownership only enhances that. I’m hugely excited about where the security offered by this partnership, and continued access to the expertise within Nordisk Games, will take us next.

Supermassive has a history of releasing PlayStation-exclusives. It has released a series of horror games on Sony’s platforms, with Until Dawn being the most notable and successful among the pack.

In other news, Square Enix has said that it opted against Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth PS4 version because it’s graphically intensive, and a new report claims that Rockstar Games has dropped plans to port Red Dead Redemption 2 to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
