Did Sony Block Cult of the Lamb From Releasing on Game Pass? (Update)

Update 8:31 p.m. EDT 08/18/22: Devolver spoke with TheGamer and stated that the allegation is “absolutely untrue.”

Forspoken writer Gary Whitta has stirred controversy by mentioning on a Kinda Funny podcast that he’s heard that Sony paid to block Cult of the Lamb Game Pass release. The Devolver-published indie, which has become a global hit, seems to have had some sort of a marketing deal with Sony considering that a number of its trailers premiered on PlayStation and it received plenty of spotlight on the platform, but we’re not so sure Whitta’s comment should be taken at face value.

At the 32:23 mark in the video above, Whitta goes on a bit of a rant about having to purchase Cult of the Lamb after being “spoiled” by day-one launches on Xbox Game Pass. “Somebody told me that part of the reason why it’s not on Game Pass is that Sony paid them not to put it on Game Pass,” Whitta said before speculating why Sony may have blocked Cult of the Lamb from launching on Microsoft’s subscription service.

ResetEra users have since been scrambling to figure out who this “somebody” might be. Some folks are convinced that Whitta’s source is a random Twitter user, who joked about Sony blocking the deal in light of Microsoft’s recent accusations in a Brazilian court document. For those who haven’t been following that story, Microsoft has accused Sony of paying to prevent games from launching on Game Pass.

At this point in time, there’s neither any indication that Whitta fell for social media chatter nor can we say that he got this report from an industry insider. Whitta does happen to be a game developer so we can’t be so sure that he just randomly threw the aforementioned statement out there.

PlayStation LifeStyle has reached out to Whitta to seek clarification, and we’ll update this article when/if we hear back.

In other news, Amy Hennig’s AAA Marvel game is rumored to be Fantastic Four, and Dead Island 2’s release date and plot have been leaked by Amazon.
