Microsoft has reportedly already started raising the price of its consoles after the Xbox Series X and Series S price was increased in India. The increase comes a mere week after Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said “it was important to maintain the prices” during the holiday period. Having broken that promise, it seems like they’ve chosen a smaller market in a developing country to test the waters of marketing a more expensive console.
How big is the Xbox Series X price increase in India?
The Xbox Series X console has increased in price by 8.5% in India while the Series S console is now 6% more expensive according to ABP Live (thanks ResetEra). This means the Series X is now more expensive than a PS5 disc console in the country; after the price increase, the former now retails for ₹55,990 while the latter retails for ₹49,990.
Most players are more concerned about the speed in the u-turn of Microsoft’s stance on price increases. This has gone from insisting that prices would remain the same when Sony announced the PS5 price increase as it “wasn’t the right time” to increase prices, to hinting at a price increase in 2023, before increasing prices a week later. Only time will tell when prices are increased in other markets.
