Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has revealed that God of War Ragnarok sales have smashed multiple records. Not only has it already sold 5.1 million copies within its debut week, but it is the fastest-selling first-party launch title in PlayStation game history. And not surprisingly, it also holds the franchise record for the entire God of War series, though no exact numbers were given. Still, the 5.1 million sales record at launch is nothing to scoff at.

It’s difficult to put these records and figures into context, especially in terms of fastest-selling records as opposed to more general best-selling records. PlayStation has announced other sales records in the past, though they generally had a narrower focus.
In July 2020, the company’s official Twitter account stated that Ghost of Tsushima was the PS4’s fastest-selling first-party game in terms of being an original IP. It sold more than 2.4 million units in the first 3 days of sales. It was also the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive in Japan. At around the same time, The Last of Us Part II had also broken the record as the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive to date in the UK, surpassing the prior record holder of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
God of War Ragnarok’s game director Eric Williams recently made it clear that the game likely won’t be getting DLC, though he does want to make a Castlevania game.
