Neither Mortal Kombat 12 nor Injustice 3 will be at The Game Awards next week said NetherRealm Studios’ CCO Ed Boon. While the studio has previously known for surprise announcements at shows, including The Game Awards back in 2018, they will not be repeating the performance for 2022.
When will Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3 be revealed?
4 years ago at the Game Awards we managed to pull off a surprise announcement of MK11, which turned out great.
Perhaps too great, as many assumed we'd repeat that trick for our next game.
Thank you for the anticipation, but we're not ready to announce the next NRS game yet.? pic.twitter.com/QMXsuEPchR

Boon added that NetherRealm wasn’t ready to announce their new game at the moment, whichever title that may be. Boon has previously said that it will definitely be either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3, not that this comes as much of a surprise. Rumors had previously claimed that Injustice 3 was in development with a focus on Watchmen for the game’s story. However, the latest rumors claim Mortal Kombat 12 had taken priority following the problems that character licensing would create if NetherRealm had fallen victim to the reshuffle at parent company Warner Bros. after their merger with Discovery.
Ed Boon had already said he would not be presenting either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3 at The Game Awards despite attending the event, but it seemed like fans hadn’t believed him due to the studio’s habit of surprise announcements. This will surely disappoint fans who had been eagerly awaiting news since Mortal Kombat 12 avoided the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations too.
