The PSP2 has been a hot ticket item for months now, with gamers and industry members alike excited for its seemingly imminent formal announcement by Sony. That doesn’t stop Capcom, though, as the company’s president sees handhelds thinning in ubiquity.
Capcom president Midori Yuasa sees handhelds as a dying market, and had the following choice words to say when asked about her company’s lack of presence in the PSP market for the past couple years:
“The casual gamer that used to play on the PC and the hardcore gamer that used to play on a dedicated gaming portable now plays on their smartphone.”
Capcom has been a company behind dozens of mobile and PSP releases, with several on the horizon. Nintendo’s 3DS has been comfortable on the top of sales charts everywhere since its pre-order availability last week, and the PSP2 continues to cause chatter. I’ll be the first to say that the handheld market is fine, and even if it is in jeopardy, Sony has both markets covered with the fancy Sony Ericsson Xperia a.k.a PlayStation Phone releasing next month, and the PSP2 on the horizon.
The question is, do you feel the handheld market is endangered? Let us know how you feel in the comments below.
