Perhaps this should come as no surprise, given that Dragon Quest has arguably been Japan’s most popular game franchise — within its own borders — since the days when “Square” wasn’t a part of Enix’s name. In fact I’d say, retrospectively, that it’s surprising that Tales of Xillia jumped ahead of it and held on these last four months. That’s definitely a big deal. But all good things must come to an end, and at least for now, The Wii-bound Dragon Quest X has surpassed Xillia on Famitsu’s fan-chosen Most Wanted countdown. Below are the top 20 from the list.
1. Dragon Quest X (Wii)
2. Tales of Xillia (PS3)
3. Final Fantasy Type 0 (PSP)
4. Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3)
5. Fotokano: Picture Girlfriend (PSP)
6. Metal Gear Solid: Rising (PS3)
7. Final Fantasy XIII-2
8. Yakuza: Of the End (PS3)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3DS)
10. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (PS3)
11. Mario Kart 3D (3DS)
12. Tiny Battlers (PSP)
13. The Last Guardian (PS3)
14. Tales of the Abyss (3DS)
15. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
16. Akiba’s Trip (PSP)
17. Queen’s Gate: Spiral Chaos (PSP)
18. Resident Evil Revelations (3DS)
19. Dragon’s Dogma (PS3)
20. Dark Souls (PS3)
Notice also how Picture Girlfriend, a game in which you play a junior high school student trying to get hot pictures of the girls in your class, has managed to creep up to number five — heavy emphasis on “creep” in that sentence. Maybe it’s more tame than it appears, but dude…dude….
Also interesting is that Final Fantasy Type 0 is, for the second or third time (though not consecutive), sitting higher than both Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2. The power of portables in Japan is displayed once again right there.
Dragon’s Dogma by Capcom makes its first appearance on the countdown here, and with being so newly announced yet still pretty far from its 2012 release, expect it to move up. I also wouldn’t be surprised of Yakuza: Of the End gets a slight bump since it now has an official release date and Sega has dressed it up in special packaging.
