Stranger’s Wrath is the fourth game in the Oddworld Inhabitants series and was originally released in 2005 for Microsoft’s Xbox where it was generally well received, garnering a Metacritic score of 88%. Blending third and first person combat the game was somewhat of a departure from the more mild-mannered titles preceding it as it threw players into an action filled Wild West styled locale of Oddworld, while still holding true to series staples such as Gamespeak (though the feature was refashioned), hard-core gameplay appeal and focused storytelling.
When Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD hits the Network this Summer, many PlayStation gamers will have their first chance to experience the tale of the game’s lead character, a bounty hunter in tow of a perilous secret. A secret that for fear of his life he must guard carefully as he embarks on hunt after hunt of some of Oddworld’s Most Wanted – and most dangerous. His weapon of choice? Whatever he comes across in his travels. Stranger’s Wrath introduced a ‘Live Ammo’ feature which would allow players to collect small animals, bugs and other Oddworld oddities for use as projectile weaponry. Whether firing a (cute?) little wandering Chippunk to lead enemies into traps, a smelly Stunk to incapacitate enemies while they vomit or simply peppering them with fatal Stingbee’s, the ‘Live Ammo’ innovation in Stranger’s Wrath was heralded as one of the game’s most engrossing additions.
Oddworld Inhabitants also reiterated that another previously Xbox exclusive title, Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee, would arrive on the PSN this fall. Both Oddworld games are to receive a visual upgrade to HD as well as a host of new features that so far the developer is playing close to their chest. PS3 owners looking to play a little catch up with the series before the launch of these HD revisions can find both of the original PlayStation titles – 1997’s Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee and 1998’s Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus – in the PlayStation Store’s PSone Classics section.
