Japanese Sales: PS3 Game Hits Home Run, 3DS Takes Flight

Today, Media Create has released its sales figures for the week ending July 17. Thanks to a port of Star Fox 64 and a new color — red — the 3DS jumped into the front of the Japanese hardware sales. On the software end of things, it was the PS3 taking the top spot with a wacky baseball title, of which the PSP version also sold a truckload or two.

Let’s get to those software charts:

01. (PS3) Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011

02. (PSP) Taiko no Tatsujin Portable DX

03. (WII) Inazuma Eleven Strikers

04. (PSP) Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2011

05. (NDS) Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary

06. (3DS) Star Fox 64 3D

07. (PSP) Unchain Blades ReXX

08. (3DS) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

09. (WII) Wii Sports Resort with Remote Plus

10. (PSP) Tiny Battlers

11. (NDS) Pokemon Black / White

12. (WII) Wii Play: Motion

13. (PS3) L.A. Noire

14. (PSP) Steins Gate

15. (WII) GoldenEye 007

16. (PS3) Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition

17. (PS3) inFamous 2

18. (PSP) ToHeart 2: Dungeon Travelers

19. (PS3) Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon

20. (3DS) Unchain Blades ReXX

L.A. Noire manages to hold on somewhat well after being number one in its debut week, while inFamous 2 and Earth Defense Force also hang around on the charts for the time being. If anyone doubts the importance of releasing a game to a big install base, the PSP version over Unchain Blades outsold its 3DS counterpart by more than a 3-to-1 ratio. Inazuma Eleven Strikers is a pretty fun game and I’d recommend it if you have a Wii and real friends. It’s like faster-paced soccer and minus all the crap that makes soccer suck.

The hardware end looked like this:

3DS – 46,637

PSP – 26,565

PS3 – 23,322

WII – 14,237

NDS – 9,208

360 – 1,734

PS2 – 1,405

We’ll see how long the 3DS keeps the crown, as even the mighty Ocarina of Time only vaulted Nintendo’s newest machine into the top sport for one quick week.
