Not a fan of EA’s slate of games but intrigued by its EA Access program currently available on Microsoft’s platform? If so, you might want to keep an eye out on Warner Bros. as the Mortal Kombat, Batman: Arkham franchise publisher might be launching its own program soon.
Just last month, Warner Bros. filed a series of trademark applications for “WB Play;” and it covers things such as: “online retail store services,” an “entertainment service” and more. But perhaps the biggest bit from it — and the most telling — is the “downloadable virtual goods” application, which mentions the following:
Downloadable virtual goods; downloadable electronic strategy and instructional guides for computer and video games; computer game software; video game software; audio and video recordings in the fields of computer and video games; downloadable multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio, video, games, and Internet Web links relating to computer and video.
While companies file trademarks all the time, the fact that the Warner Bros. website for Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor shows the WB Play logo in the upper left-hand corner suggests this could be something that’s already in motion. Could this mean that Warner Bros. is going up against Steam or EA’s Origin digital distribution platform or is it just an online storefront
Important to note that Warner Bros. owns not only game licenses and studios, but is also a big player when it comes to music, TV and movie production, too. So don’t be surprised if WB Play launches with all kinds of media and not just games.
We’ll make to keep an eye out and report on WB Play if and when it concerns PlayStation platforms.
