Hajime Tabata Reveals the Origin of the Name Final Fantasy Type-0

Ever wonder what Final Fantasy Type-0 means? Wonder no more. Game Director Hajime Tabata has revealed to IGN the origin of the name, and according to him, Type-0 represents something new.

We incorporated the meaning of starting anew, from zero, in the title Type-0. It was an expression of determination towards a series of its own, one that is both like and unlike Final Fantasy.

The game was originally called Final Fantasy Agito XIII, but its re-branding as Type-0 took effect around 2009.

The notion of it being an independent title came about when I saw the results of pre-production, seeing the action-based combat, the mature style with its raw depiction of life, and the unique multiplayer taking form.

As far as Type-0‘s characters being named after playing cards is concerned, Tabata said that he and the team simply liked the idea.

Tetsuya Nomura came up with the idea of having 1~13 and a Joker when we kicked off this project as a mobile title within the Final Fantasy XIII series. We liked the idea and continued to use it for the PSP version.

Interesting revelations!

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is out for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this Tuesday.
