As further translations of 4Gamer’s recent interview SCE Vice President Masayasu Ito emerge, we have learned that Sony might consider an enhanced PlayStation 4 that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray.
When 4Gamer brought up the topic of Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray, Ito said (translation courtesy of Siliconera):
The Blu-ray disc drive that is currently installed in the PS4 is made exclusively for the Blu-ray disc player, so it cannot read the 3-layer media that is standardized by Ultra HD Blu-ray. For this reason, the PlayStation 4 models that are out in the market cannot be compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Ito said that Sony is currently considering Ultra HD Blu-ray compatibility and that the company could make it happen with, say, a high-power PS4 model, but a lot of factors have to be considered when making such a decision. For example:
“How many units of this enhanced PS4 will we be able to sell?” and “how much will we sell them for?”
4Gamer points out that Ultra HD Blu-ray display requires 4K or UHD TVs for best results, and that it may be a tough market to crack considering the amount of people who own high-end TV sets.
In the same interview, Ito also confirmed that Sony doesn’t have any first-party PS Vita games in development. You can read more on that here.
