Unlockable through regular gameplay, Loot Boxes in Overwatch can also be purchased with real money, giving you cosmetic items such as “Skins, Emotes, Victory Poses, Voice Lines, Sprays, and Highlight Intros, as well as Credits that you can use toward unlocking an item of your choice.”
Here’s the different prices for the Loot Boxes:
- 2 loot boxes – $1.99/£1.59
- 5 loot boxes – $4.99/£3.99
- 11 loot boxes – $9.99/£7.99
- 24 loot boxes – $19.99/£15.99
- 50 loot boxes – $39.99/£31.99
The item quality levels are common, rare, epic, and legendary, and each Loot Box includes at least one rare quality or better item. If you happen to receive an item that’s already in your collection, you’ll receive Credits instead.
In his launch message, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said:
We’re thrilled to welcome console and PC gamers everywhere to the future world of Overwatch. We’ve worked hard to create a team shooter that anyone can enjoy, with rewarding cooperative gameplay, fast-paced competitive action, and a diverse cast of awesome heroes that we’re proud to add to the Blizzard family. We think shooter veterans and anyone new to the genre will find that Overwatch is an absolute blast to play.
On Facebook yesterday, Game Director Jeff Kaplan answered some questions about Overwatch, revealing that the pulled Competitive mode is the current focus for the team. It will be included in the first major content update, which should be available in late June:
We already have it in internally, and we were playing it this weekend, starting to get a feel for it. One of the things that we want to change is the season length. We heard a lot of complaints from the community that they felt that one-month seasons were too short. We thought there was a lot of cool about one-month seasons. Particularly, Hearthstone does it really well. This game is different than Hearthstone, so we decided to go with seasons that will probably be about three months. Even more specific than that, there probably be a two-and-a-half month season with a couple of weeks off in between.
They’re also looking at the Sudden Death format and evaluating if they can have it happen less frequently.
