With Destiny: Rise of Iron releasing exclusively on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Bungie used their weekly update to tell PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners that they’ll still support the game on those platforms, but changes to progression are coming.
Now referring to the PS3 and Xbox 360 as “legacy consoles,” Bungie explains that, once September rolls around, console families will no longer share progression:
Our goal is always to bring every player from this awesome community along for the ride as we continue the story of Destiny. At the same time, we will also continue to support players who elect not to upgrade their console hardware. This Fall, you’ll still be able to play Destiny on legacy generation consoles, but that journey will occur on a separate path. Up to this point, player progression between current and legacy consoles in the same family has been shared by each account. This summer, that experience will fork into two parallel experiences that will no longer share progression.
As legacy generation Guardians adapt to current platforms after August, there will be functionality in place to enable them to port their characters to the new console – in the same family.
Bungie will offer more details on the progression changes and transfer, as well as the deadlines for this conversion, in the coming weeks.
Rise of Iron is now available for pre-order through the PlayStation Store (you need The Taken King to purchase it) and it comes with a static theme as a bonus. The expansion will then unlock at 10am PT/1pm ET on September 20 and will require 14GB of free space.
Bungie adds that Destiny update 2.3.0 is set to be released in the next few weeks.
