Video game historian Liam Robertson and folks behind Unseen64 and DidYouKnowGaming? have unveiled a cancelled Sonic The Hedgehog skateboarding game. Called Sonic Extreme, the prototype was developed by Vision Scape Interactive initially without SEGA’s consent but later presented it to Sonic Team’s Yuji Naka, who was reportedly quite impressed with it.
The developer was aiming for a PlayStation 2, Xbox and Gamecube release but unfortunately, the project never went forward due to an alleged breakdown in communication.
“The project reused technology developed by Vision Scape for their Tech Deck Playset software, as well as a cancelled game based on Nickelodeon’s Rocket Power cartoon,” reads the description beneath the video. Interestingly, we’ve learned that two years after things fell through, SEGA demoed its new title, Sonic Riders, which “resembled” Vision Scape’s pitch.
The full video above is a little over 12 minutes long and worth watching.
