According to a report from VR Focus, an unnamed representative of God of War developer Sony Santa Monica told them that the studio is working on a “full-blown 2nd wave title” for PlayStation VR. The source adds that it will be revealed soon, and they know it will go well with the core PlayStation audience.
Here’s what the source told VR Focus, after mentioning that past VR projects from Sony Santa Monica have mostly just been prototypes from game jams:
[Sony] Santa Monica are working on something big. It’s a full-blown 2nd wave title for [PlayStation VR]. It’ll be revealed soon and I know it’ll go well with the core PlayStation audience, but I can’t say any more than that!
Other VR games Sony Santa Monica have been a part of include Here They Lie and Bound. The studio also created a God of War VR prototype several years ago, which was mentioned by Sony’s Richard Marks in a recent interview with Glixel:
So this is 2009, 2010. We had the PlayStation Move controllers, and a lot of people were just doing different stuff with them. We put them on our head and did this with the TV. Another guy in R&D was putting it on his head and having a phone screen in front of his eyes, and that’s, you know, more like VR. And the same thing happened down in Santa Monica Studios. They made, like, a God of War VR demo. They took the code and just did the same thing with a screen in front of their face, a phone screen.
Back in 2016, Studio Head Shannon Studstill told Kinda Funny Games that VR is “part of our dialogue pretty heavy right now,” and virtual reality is “the beginning of something big.”
If the report from VR Focus turns out to be true, an E3 2017 announcement for Sony Santa Monica’s VR title seems likely.
