2K Games Revises NBA 2K Microtransaction Options in Belgium and Netherlands

2K Games has announced that it has disabled the ability to purchase NBA 2K MyTeam card packs with premium currency in Belgium and Netherlands. This move follows recently drafted laws in both countries that require video game publishers to comply with local gambling regulations.

2K said in a statement that it “disagrees” with Belgium Gaming Commission‘s and the Kansspelautoriteit‘s position on the issue, and will continue to liaise with both authorities to “explain” its view. In the meantime, the publisher will comply with the new laws.

The official statement can be read below. Do note that 2K released the same statement for both countries, replacing only the commissions’ names.

The Belgium Gaming Commission (BGC) has stated that games which include some ‘loot box’ style mechanics violate gambling laws in Belgium. While we disagree with this position, we are working to comply with the BGC’s current interpretation of these laws. As a result, we made some local changes to the MyTeam mode. These changes are necessary for the purposes of the BGC’s interpretation of the Belgian Gaming Act. Specifically, we will be able to buy and buy coupons (not earned) currency / VC.Gamers are still able to acquire myTeam points. We will be continuing conversations with the BGC in order to explain our view. If you agree, we recommend that you contact your local government representative. We will keep the community posted on any developments. We apologize for any inconvenience.
