Mortal Kombat Film Writer Greg Russo Wants to Do a BioShock Movie

Video game movies are tough to pull off, as evidenced by the rocky history of bad adaptations. In 2008, we almost got a BioShock movie, but high budget costs ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the film. However, Greg Russo, writer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat film, has stated that he would love to do a BioShock movie, one that emphasizes horror while keeping the budget down.

Here’s what he had to say:

I would love to figure out a way to do BioShock and I’ve tried. I’ve been like elbowing everybody I can possibly find, because I think I have a really awesome way to do it that would be really fun. And bring the horror of it to the forefront and hopefully keep the budget at a manageable price. But yeah, that’s one that I’d absolutely adore, that be a lot of fun to work on.

Russo has a few video game films in the works, like Resident Evil and Saints Row, and perhaps if those turn out to be successful, a BioShock film adaptation could be greenlit.

As one of the most beloved games of last generation (and arguably of all time), BioShock would be perfect for films, especially when adapting the game’s sense of atmosphere and narrative to a movie. Although, video game movies don’t have the best track record, but it seems like filmmakers are trying to change that by listening to the community and being faithful to the source material.

Recently the Detective Pikachu film released to positive critical reception. And the makers of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie decided to push the film back to redesign Sonic’s character model, following fan outcry. Plus, we have The Witcher Netflix series on track for a 2019 release, which seems to be crafted with care.

Because of how beloved the BioShock series is, there would be immense scrutiny from its fan base for it to be up to a certain standard. If it happens, it has to be done right.

What would you like to see from a BioShock film? Would you like it to follow the first game, or be its own new story? Let us know!
