It looks like Sony is either quietly discontinuing prepaid PS Plus cards or gearing up to replace them with new cards for the revamped service. While the latter makes sense, it would be an odd move to wait until after the new PS Plus has already rolled out in multiple regions before shipping new cards. Regardless, people have noticed that the cards aren’t in stock at major retailers worldwide and those that do have them, only have a very small, limited quantity in stock.
Sony hasn’t officially confirmed that it’s phasing out PS Plus cards
First reported by Polish site XGP (via Video Games Chronicle), PS Plus cards are mainly being sold by third-party sellers on Amazon. While Best Buy and Target have some in stock in the United States, Walmart seems to be out of stock. In the UK, only Currys is still holding some stock. Amazon, Game, Smyths, and Argos among others are only selling PS Store gift cards. PlayStation’s UK website, which still shows the option to purchase the cards, now redirects to a page selling PS Store gift cards.
There’s a possibility that Sony wants to streamline purchases by only selling generic gift cards in various denominations that can be used towards all kinds of purchases. Those who do rely on prepaid PS Plus gift cards need not worry as you can always purchase prepaid cards to add funds to your wallet and then use those funds to purchase a membership plan of your choosing.
Sony has not officially commented on the matter. We’ll update our readers when we do hear something.
In other news, it looks like Sony is set to announce two “perfect for PS5 gaming monitors” as well as some new gaming headsets, and Gran Turismo 7 has been dropped from the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games esports competition.
